Matt Bolling
- Bass / BaritoneMatt Bolling is the founder and president of VocalBluR. Matt has been involved in singing throughout his life from preschool church choirs, school choruses, and Atlee High School's top show choir, Illusion. During Matt's early college years, he managed and was a member of local indie rock band, Kremlin, which performed hundreds of shows over a few years, entertained large crowds at local clubs, toured the east coast, and performed at the Vans Warped Tour in 2003.
During that time, Matt also expanded his own private company, Magnolia Productions, which became involved in band promotion, tour management, concert booking, and a recording studio. Matt / Magnolia Productions also booked many concerts with top acts from 2000 to 2005, including the likes of Fall Out Boy, Relient K, Plain White T's, Sixpence None the Richer, Jars of Clay, Mae, and more. Matt has also been involved in the past with the local music scene by working with Brad Wells of Sea of Sound Productions at the Innsbrook After Hours Concert Series.
Matt became involved with a cappella music as a member of Virginia Tech's Juxtaposition, one of the top all-male ensembles in the world. During his time in Juxtaposition Matt served as President of the group and helped record and produce their 2007 release, Anomaly. -
Fiona Ellis
- SopranoFiona Ellis' musical endeavors began early, singing in Welsh folk festivals with her family and performing in Suzuki piano recitals by the age of five. She later starred in various theater productions including the roles of Tiny Tim in A Christmas Carol, Gretl in The Sound of Music, and the title role in Cinderella. Fiona won numerous gold and silver medals for Rhode Island's "Solo & Ensemble" competitions as both a singer and flutist. She was selected three times as the # 1 ranking and twice as the # 2 ranking in Rhode Island's All State choir from 1998-2003. Throughout her days at Barrington High School, Fiona was an active member of various auditioned performing ensembles and also co-founded and co-directed the a cappella group The Flavors.
Fiona sang soprano in the University of Richmond's select choir Schola Cantorum, touring with them to France and Italy in 2004 and Spain in 2007. The group also performed a 40-voice motet with the world-renowned Tallis Scholars in 2004 and produced their first professional CD Ye Shall Have a Song in 2005. Fiona also served as Spirit Chair and later Musical Director of the University of Richmond's original co-ed a cappella group Choeur du Roi.
After graduating in 2007 with a double major in Rhetoric & Communication Studies and French and a minor in Dance, Fiona continues her involvement in the performing arts community in Richmond. She currently sings with The James River Singers and is now the Musical Director of VocalBluR. -
Shannon Starke
- Alto / SopranoShannon Starke's love of music started when she was only about two years old. Her mother became her number one fan as Shannon serenaded her from the baby seat of her bicycle. From ages 3 to 18, Shannon sang in various church choirs and a cappella groups. Some of her best performances, however, were rocking out to Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston in front of her bedroom mirror (with a hairbrush for a mic, of course).
In college, Shannon became involved in the Roanoke College Choir, where she was blessed to have some incredible musical experiences. The choir performed Beethoven's Ninth Symphony (in its original German) with the Roanoke Symphony. They also traveled to Brazil to give a concert in Rio de Janiero's Candelaria Cathedral and France to sing in commemoration of the 60th anniversary of D-Day. The choir sang in Paris in addition to each of the towns liberated by the American forces in the summer of 1945.
Shannon's fondest memories of singing in college, however, were with her all-female a cappella group, Mainstreet. Shannon sang with the group for four years, made many lasting friendships, and gained a true love of a cappella music. Her solos in the group included "True Colors", "For the Longest Time", "These Dreams", and a duet in "When I Think About You". After leaving Roanoke College and missing singing tremendously, Shannon joined VocalBluR, and is truly enjoying singing with people who love it just as much as she does. -
Jeff Gray
- Tenor / Vocal PercussionThroughout his life, Jeff has loved to sing; in the shower, in the car, in the grocery store. Jeff was involved in numerous local rock bands throughout his high school days but never participated in any formal training or choral singing. By the end of high school, Jeff became more interested in hip-hop and break-dancing and fell out of the singing world.
It was not until college did Jeff realize his talents as a singer and entertainer. It was one night in the first year of college when a friend played him a clip of Rahzel beat-boxing his infamous "If Your Mother Only Knew". Jeff went back to his dorm that night and began working on mimicking the routine and quickly developed a talent and passion for vocal percussion. Jeff went on to teach himself other famous hip-hop beats like Soul Sonic Force's "Planet Rock", and he also learned to improvise his own beats.
Not too long after, Jeff joined Virginia Tech's all-male a cappella group Juxtaposition. Jeff performed in numerous concerts, including the ICCA competition, where he made famous his opening beat-box introduction and sang solos like Hoobastank's "Running Away" and Fountain of Wayne's "Stacy's Mom".
Jeff was brought back into the world a cappella through a fellow Juxtaposition alumnus, Matt Bolling, and he now resides as a member and main vocal percussionist of VocalBluR. -
Erin Frye
- Alto IIA recent graduate of James Madison University, Erin Frye has been singing as long as she can remember. She began playing piano at the age of 4 and taught herself how to play the guitar at the age of 15. Erin was a part of SPARC (School of the Performing Arts in the Richmond Community) during middle school, and while in high school she led the Youth Praise Band at her church. She led music on various church retreats in the VA Conference and had a solo or lead role in every church play that she was in. She was also involved in a few musicals and the Show Choir at her high school. She sang in the select All-County and All-District choruses in middle and high school, and she performed in the Junior Miss America Pageant, where she won a college scholarship.
Music is in Erin's soul largely due to her mother, Kate Frye, a jazz singer who toured around the world with her band during her 20's. Erin followed a similar path, singing with a popular local rock band during her college years called Midnight Train. She also sang with the female a cappella group Note-oriety at JMU where she was their Public Relations Director and a leader on exec for two years. When Erin moved back to Richmond after graduating from JMU, she knew she wanted to continue singing, and she was selected to be a founding member and the Business Manager for VocalBluR. -
Steve Travers
- TenorA native of Darien, Connecticut, Steve Travers started his singing career at age 15 performing the role of Roger in his high school's production of Grease! Landing principle and lead roles in the remainder of the high school productions, singing in the select madrigal and pop/jazz performing groups, Steve also found himself as the sole representative of Darien in the 2000 Connecticut All-State Musicians as a tenor in the chorus.
At the University of Richmond, Steve sang with Schola Cantorum and discovered the world of pop a cappella with Choeur du Roi (pronounced "CORE duh roy", like the pants!), where he served as Assistant Musical Director and arranged and sang solos for such crowd pleasers as NSync's "It's Gonna Be Me" and the epic "Lion King Medley".
After graduating with a music degree in vocal performance and composition, Steve returned to Darien and starred in a couple of community theater productions. He also kept himself busy singing in his church choir and composing the scores to a couple of films written and directed by his younger brother Dave, now an aspiring filmmaker at Southern Methodist University.
Upon hearing about auditions for VocalBluR from music director and fellow Choeur du Roi alumnus Fiona Ellis, Steve jumped at the opportunity to audition. He is ecstatic to be back in a cappella music, and he is also singing with the James River Singers and First Presbyterian Church as their tenor soloist and section leader. -
Colleen Smyth
- AltoWhether it was in the baby seat of her father's car or singing in Epiphany Catholic Church's children's choir, Colleen Smyth has always maintained an intense sense of passion for music. In her youth, Colleen sang for Midlothian High School's all girls show choir, City Lights, and she performed supporting and lead roles in such musicals as Fiddler on the Roof and Pirates of Penzance. Colleen also played violin for the school's orchestra.
Once she got to college, Colleen's concentration on her undergraduate degree put music on the back burner, and she soon realized how much she longed for this creative outlet in her life. Colleen auditioned for VocalBluR in August of 2007 and now sings alto for the group, very happy that she is able to pursue what she missed for so long. -
Phil Lawson
- TenorPhil Lawson received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from James Madison University in 1999 with a concentration in voice. While at JMU, he performed in several choral ensembles and took part in their musical theater and opera productions. He was also a founding member of the University's elite male a cappella group Exit 245.
For seven years, Phil was the choral director at Clover Hill High School in Midlothian, VA. During his tenure, the choral program grew from about 130 students to well over 200 students and received numerous awards and accolades. He has sung with several Richmond area groups including the Richmond Symphony Chorus and the James River Singers.
Phil currently serves as the Minister of Music and Worship at Walnut Grove Baptist Church in Mechanicsville while maintaining an active schedule as a choral clinician and adjudicator. Phil and his wife, Sandy, live in Glen Allen with their two children, Anna and Trevor. -
Kristin Zannino
- SopranoStarting at an early age, Kristin Zannino always had a flare for music and dance, taking ballet, hip hop, tap, and piano lessons. Since then she has been a part of her church's children's choir, youth choir, and adult choir, while performing in their productions Master's Plan and Glorious Christmas Nights.
In middle school, Kristin was a part of every select ensemble, and she also sang in the All-County, All-District and All-State choirs. During her high school years at Mills E. Godwin she started in the select girls choir, Musical Illusions, where she was later selected as a student director. She then progressed up to the top choir, Madrigals, for her junior and senior years. Throughout high school she sang every female part from Alto II to Soprano I, stretching her vocal range, which now spans a little over three octaves.
Kristin got her first glimpse of a cappella music in eighth grade watching the Madison Project from JMU perform at her sibling's high school. The founder of the group, J.R. Snow, also started the Richmond High School a cappella group in which Kristin was one of two freshmen selected. Her love for music has continued, as she has since helped many churches' worship teams and is now a member of VocalBluR. -
Sean McLane
- BaritoneSean McLane is a baritone and has been a member of VocalBluR since August 2007. As a young lad, Sean enjoyed many talents in football, baseball, and academics, but music emerged as his primary talent following a successful run as Santa in the Cool Yule Christmas Show at Gordon Elementary. In the succeeding years, he continued exploring musical theater, playing such roles as Nicely Nicely, Charlie Brown, and the Bum in Little Shop of Horrors. Sean also explored choral music and had the honor of attending All-District Chorus for 6 straight years and the Virginia All-State Choir in both his junior and senior years. At VCU he performed with the Commonwealth Singers, the Madrigalists, and the MCV group The Notochords, where he served as Musical Director.
Sean has considerable experience as an arranger, starting with an arrangement of Josh Groban's "You Raise Me Up", performed by the Monacan High School's combined choirs in the Spring of 2004. He has spent 4 1/2 years orchestrating the band for Monacan's Center Stage, Powhatan's Revv'd Up, and arranging numerous pieces for a cappella performance. He hopes to lend these skills to VocalBluR's success and is excited to be on board.
Sean continues his personal education by working at Powhatan High School, assisting as an accompanist and arranger, while observing and learning from Christopher Thomas, the choral educator in residence. He hopes to one day become a choral music educator and professional arranger.
